Gunpowder Tea
Gunpowder tea is a unique green, (or sometimes oolong) tea in which the dried tea leaves are rolled into tiny balls. The origins of the name of this strong, delicious tea with a long shelf life are somewhat disputed.
The name is Chinese, (zhu cha), actually means “bead tea” or “pearl tea,” but gunpowder tea should not be confused with boba tea (which is sometimes called “pearl tea” in English). Some people believe that the British gave gunpowder it’s English name when they first encountered it in China because it resembled the dark pellets of gunpowder.
Other folks believe that the tea was named such because the tea leave open up and “explode” when brewed. Yet another possibility is that the name was derived from the Mandarin Chinese “gang pao de” which means “freshly brewed” and sounds similar to “gun-pow-der.”
